Manila – Random Exploring (December 9, 2017)

in Philippines, Travel Updates

One of the great joys of early FI is having the free time to pretty much do whatever it is that you want to do. As readers may be aware, I recently flew out to Manila to escape the cold weather and to this day, there are very few things that excite me more than waking up at the crack of dawn on Day 1 in a new city that I’ve never explored before.

As usual, I did very little (zero) research into Manila, so I really had no idea what to expect… at all…

So, you just kinda wing it and learn as you go… Hey, this is early FI not a business trip, after all… There’s no place for rules, regulations, and set schedules…

I always had this impression that the Philippines was big on basketball (particularly the NBA), so it was pretty cool to see the young bucks up bright and early hooping it up…

The following image is own that will always be embedded in my brain since it was really the first glance I got of inside Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

As I’ve recently learned, the last 10-15 years has seen a huge transformation (and boom) in BGC, with lots of skyscrapers and high rises being built up…

When you’ve got lots of amenities and buildings with the name The Bellagio, you’re probably naturally going to attract a lot of tourists and visitors…

I guess you could say all this development caught me by surprise, as I wasn’t expecting many of the pockets within BGC to be so new and modern…

It’s easy to feel immediately at home when you look around you and can recognize many of the same stores/brands you would find back home in the states…

I mean I could even pick up the new iPhone X if I really wanted to…

I eventually found my way to Bonifacio High Street, which has got to be my favorite “kick it spot” at the moment…

First off, there’s a Din Tai Fung. So, if you’ve ever got a hankering for some XLB (xiaolongbao)…

Not far away is a Crystal Jade restaurant… Yeah, so many of my favorites in HK are also found here in Manila… Pretty neat, indeed.

There’s even The Halal Guys… Wow, I was not expecting to find one of these! Hello NYC in Manila!

But on this particular day, I decided to hold off on the “tried and true” stuff and try a local hot spot instead… Manam which serves up “Comfort Filipino” food.

A corned beef dish with egg and watermelon beef soup… Yum!

High Street really comes alive at night, especially now during the holiday season.

My favorite time of year (and minus the cold too)!

Kids will be kids… Yes, me included.

Have your picture taken inside a tank… No, that’s not me…

This time last year I was in HK and noticed how decked out the malls were for the holiday season… Manila is no different, which is pretty awesome.

Did I mention the holiday season is in the air? So much that the stores are well stocked with: sweaters, scarves, turtlenecks, and other items you would never be caught wearing in the Philippines…

LOL, it’s just way too hot/humid here for this type of attire, so I got a chuckle when I stepped into a few of the stores…

The Philippines is world famous for their mangos… Yup, there’s plenty of that to be found here and I made sure to grab a few bags…

When I was a teenager, I used to work at The Commissary and remember bagging corned beef cans to no end… Many of the customers were Filipinos who would buy canned foods in bulk to send back home…

Well, fast forward 19 years later, and I got to see first hand for myself what the grocery aisles in Manila look like…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much canned corned beef in one aisle before…

Welcome to Manila and BGC! I already feel at home…

Until next time…

Fight On!

Great to see that you are having a good time….
….and great to see that image of that basketball court as I, too, share interest in hooping it up worldwide besides digging into numbers, thinking about future and putting the pieces together to build up a bit of wealth. 🙂
Actually I even run a little project that tries to gather a good database of outside streetball courts through users so you can look up a spot to play when travelling.

Philippines has been a basketball hotspot in Asia for quite some time.

Enjoy your trip!
